Interesting stuff.

If I was to cut my bike lift in to the floor (I have seen that done by some body here) how deep does a concrete floor generally go? Looking at the lift I am worried that I will dig down to the earth?

What about secret storage area (behind a false wall maybe?) for storing the stuff that your missus doesnt need to know about, such as any "extra" bikes, tools, pornography etc that she might not approve of you buying....

Gallery from upper floor down to lwr.

Pair of I Beams, one in the roof space above the Gallery opening, the other full length and cantilevered out above the main doors via a hatch shutter. Both beams instaled with roller carriages for electric hoists. Then you can get a whole bike or engine upstairs. Also useful for hanging the front end of a bike off with the forks out.

I've recently been offered a 6m by 4m gauge plate, was used by Ilmor to calibrate their cars, not sure if you'd want to pay for the transport though and the whole building would have to be designed around this, ground works a nightmare. I'd look into getting an area of the slab set in granite, certainly get the floor powerfloated to give a shiny and level finish to the floor. Piece of piss to keep clean and saves having to paint the floor on a regular basis.

Plumb the whole space for air, lots of take offs. Set some in the ceiling of the ground floor and hang spiral hoses and inertia reel hooks by them for easy use of windy guns and other tools.

I'd not be able to forgive myself if I didn't aim for lathe, mill, pillar drill and band saw as minimum of floor standing tools.

I'd also set up block walls to partition off machining area and a welding/brazing area.

Upstairs I'd aim for clean room for messing around with engines and components. Metrology area based around a large gauge plate, computer with some Cad software and a decent parts cleaner and blasting cabinet.

That is all, not much to see here then.:eusa_think:

woops forgot cabinets dedicated to each bike/car so you don't mix the bits up

Man.

This wants me to move house!

To a new joint with a massive garage like I've always wanted...

Jonny Mac's list there is pretty damn near perfect!

If it was mine I'd have to have (no particular order) - a lot of light, power, a fridge, a sink, work bench, a lift, tool chest, a telly (with Sky like my posh neighbour who has everything), loads of storage for parts and stuff, a ground anchor, a MotoGP style mat for parking the bike on, bike and music photos and posters all over... there's more I'm sure.

Forgot - a digital radio which I now need everywhere I go somehow. Gotta love Rock Radio!

Decent flooring is a must. Heating and decent insulation is another.

A mate built his dream garage, and it was built to residential standards so that it could be converted into a bungalow at a later date. Had it's own plumbing and boiler, etc. Makes winter fettling like working in your house, which is nice.

Don't forget your piranha tank, rocket launching bay and big chair with white fluffy cat that you can stroke while greeting MI6 agents. :eusa_whistle:

I'd be happy if mine stopped leaking. And the draughts were plugged. And some power supplied. And water. And seating. And a proper work bench. And a bike lift ... blimey, it's a slippery slope once you get started, isn't it.

I'll draw you something up later in the week.

So:

Underfloor heating - generally but leave areas for bikes.

Floor finish - we're going to use slate tiles or flag stones (natural or manmade) fully bonded to the screed which is laid over the closed cell insulation ... natch.

Inspection pit.

Bike lift well - which is why we're using a screed.

Staorage cup'ds on the first floor - you put doors in at 1200mm high and the rear wall goes in about 450mm high.

General construction - you've shown cavity wall, I'd favor solid masonry with Sto rendered insulation to the exterior. Use those I section timber joist / rafters.

Electric Roller Shutters - we don't need up and over doors.

Double door at the side for the bikes.

More when I've had a think about it

Pfft - we have a good understanding when it comes to me buying stuff.

She doesn't voice disapproval, and in return, I don't pack up the van and go and live somewhere else!

The system works.

The heating insulation ideas very important especially in Norn Ireland!

Musts for me:

Black and white tiled flooring.

Garage length bench. Under bench storage

Block and chain lift.

Parts washer.

At least one bike lift. (Sunk into the floor rocks!)

Compressed air system.

Phase 3 power.

2 poster lift for the scoby and you can store the Austin up on the lift to save floor space.

bog, Kit / changing storage area.

Brew area with microwave. Intercom to the house. Telephone, point for broadband.

Electric remote roller door.

Alarm / anti ram posts.

Outside concrete power-washer area with proper drainage.

Just looking at a few bikes on line. The odd one where the bike is in the living quarters.

How many of you let the bike live indoors?

If I didn't have a garage and had good enough access to get a bike in, I'd probably do it.

Mind you, I've got a garage and my dining table currently has the battery and carbs from the GPz sitting on it while I'm sitting next to a pile of Fireblade bling. Sometimes living alone is good

Built a 350ypvs in my bedroom when I was a stoooodent and have kept a 125lc behind the sofa in the front room.

The missus isn't too keen on bike in the house (in the bits we live in) but I'm working on changing her mind
