BMW s1000rr engine refresh videos

I do a few s1000rr engines and when the latest one dropped onto the bench I thought I'd do a bit of a 'how to' guide on stripping and rebuilding it. I've tried to include guides to thinks like valve clearances, leak downs tests and usual engine checks without going too basic or hopefully too complicated.

This is part 1, if nothing else it'll cure insomnia

Just curious to know that mine (hopefully) looks the same!

Bottom end is the same except for a detail update on some gear tooth shapes.

Head and cams are different on the gen3 but you'd have to be hawkeye to spot the difference

as an aside, do you stick with 5-40 oil or go to 10-40 as the default?

I run Motul 300v 5w40. This motor was also on the same oil and it does work well. Having read up about some oil stuff on a separate posting on here last week it really does seem the 5 or 10 winter rating isn't very important on a race bike as it'll be warmed up before riding (and generally not used in freezing temperatures). But no reason to move away from the BMW recommendation as it all costs the same

It's what I'm currently using, but was looking to consolidate on the oil bulk buying front so that the cbr400 gets 300v as well(10w40). Might go 5w40 for both when we've built the fresh engine up.

Really enjoyed the last two episodes @wavey - particularly the cylinder head one, and how the valve is held in with collets etc.

keep up the good work and bonus point for sorting out the strobe lighting

I'm glad the wobbly light has gone

What oil do you use on reassembly? Motul 300V, or a specialist assembly oil which gets changed early?

300v 5w40

I asked the same question when I first rebuilt one, the chaps at hawk said straight onto the good stuff.

Just a short lesson on clutch stuff today. I hope you're all paying attention, there will be a test at the end!
