Would have been the Masters Historic at Brands this weekend...  Found this earlier. Think it's some of the best onboard I've ever seen.

That's Jamie Constable's Tyrrell 012 in  front and Greg Thornton's Lotus on pole.

Done a bit with Jamie, but not on that car.

The Williams was one of yours no? I think that's an FW07 that's alongside?

No that's Mike Cantelon. That car is a new build built up by Williams a coulpe of years ago from an unused chassis.

Again I've worked on Mikes cars but not that one.

Brilliant. Some really great insight there.

It's very clever, I'm glad such things exist and a great insight into packaging and no committee bollocks and I agree with a lot of his peeves; looks great from most angles but I don't like the rear (not that I'm in the market) it's not even the fan (although I wish he could've hidden it) it's more the fake mesh on the rear, seems a shame.

Also I'm glad it's not dripping with exposed carbon, I'm sure it's better than a McLaren F1 but all those little niggles he cites on the McLaren are I think partly why it's still a stunning car; it's not quite perfect (for GM) but it's the flaws that gives it a human quality, a soul (I'm sounding like Clarkson)

I don't think this will age as well as the F1 ICBVW

Interesting times although this isn't really a competitor, Mercedes Project One starts production later this year, Valkyrie in the pipe, The T.50, and others I forget (one last huzzah before the milk floats) I do like the Project ONE (apart from the daft graphics down the sides, it reminds me of a shrunken 911 GT1.

Incidentally while they were talking advances in materials etc I was wondering @sev say someone absolutely shit-gented an F1 into a million parts and the owner said look put all the components onto a chassis made with the latest materials would you end up with a crap F1 or a better one? I think I know the answer

@sev have you applied for a job with Murray, yet...I’m willing to put in a good word for you :D

I've been watching his MK1 Escort being built; he certainly knows what he wants.

I don't know if he'd drive me mad or be an utter joy :D

There's a lot of knowledge in that head I hope has been passed along.

@sev sounds like a proper bloke.. not sure about the ego thing, taking that good care of other people..!

Oh yes, the car.. not too keen on the look of it. Dislike the fan muchly. Lovely technical tour the force though..

he is.

The ego comes out in a manner where he's not ashamed to pronounce his greatness - he has a supreme confidence in his conviction, ideas and abilities - he believes utterly in brand himself.  it's not a destructive or obnoxious ego like some, but more a knowing of what he wants and that's the way its going to be.  Adrian Newey was the same, as was John Barnard.  You could argue or offer an opinion, but you'd better be bloody right and know your shit, especially with Barnard as he'd properly have you in the metaphorical dock corss examining your suggestion as to why it would be better than what he wanted. - but if you were right, he would cave in.  But they're all men who learn't by doing and fucking up and doing again, and not one set of jet washed teeth or primarni suits to be seen.

Like bernie ecclescake, and Ron Dennis and all that old school - he always looks after his closest who have been with him from day one.

The t50 I can only imagine was something he approached with great relish and caution at the same time.  he resisted for years against calls to "re-do" the F1, for him he was ever only going to touch it if everything was right, and that's taken what, nearly thirty years since it's first genesis as a 'what if...' in that airport lounge back in '91

It was interesting that as soon as he got wind McLaren were planning another 3 seater and what most were assuming would be a new F1 (what would later become The Speedtail) he put the brakes on the T.50 project then as soon as Woking released images etc of it he was okay lads we're back on. He almost sounded disappointed that the three seat Mclaren project wasn't what most were expecting.

now thats a story in itself...

I think I could take a stab, it's probably similar story to the reason Mclaren release too many new models too often.

Sounds like a brand testing the strength of their image. Which gives a lot of good, modern machinery a very second rate feeling.

Mclaren automotive was/is a success story, especially growth wise it just appears certain people want to act like they have a Ferrari heritage release any old product frequently and people will buy due to badge.

Unfortunately with certain models it's turning Mclarens into expensive Lotus.

The LT and limited run cars bar minor niggles all seem to have proper QC but the other stuff seems hit and miss, they've few really good dealers and far too much new old stock sitting around. They wanted to be the "Apple" of the supercar world but is biting them in the arse.

The 720 is bonkers and radically different to their rivals but rather than concentrate on that model they seem to be rushed out the door for the new flavour of the month which understandably leads to problems, such a radical thing was always going to have niggles but some of it seems self inflicted, the age old Mclaren-ism i.e well we could use this longstanding mass specialist manufacturer of switch guts/actuators or we can build one ourselves, we have no time to reliability test and is three times the cost.

There are MC-12's about for example that offer really stupid levels of performance for relatively low outlay that have better QC than some of the new suff, partly I'd suggest because it wasn't rushed (especially given cost new) especially if you buy a later one with an extensive warranty, there's a company out there I think it's Thorney or something I think they're a bit like Hartge is to BMW.

Sorry I've veered off track.

Mclaren have grown fast, it inevitable there will be some issues, they've done well really, really well.

I thought the first mass produced model, the Mp4 12? was a dud though, some real obvoius cock ups in its design.

Back to the T50. presumably they are subbying out all the manufacturing?

Who's doing the tubs and composite stuff.  GTR  down in Bognor?

The Chris Harris Pod cast with GM is really worth a listen too.

It's off the back of the launch of the T50, but most of it is about Murry's career.
