front suspension woes

Got my bike back after the water pump O-ring debacle- The front was starting to play up a bit (rebounding a bit too quick) just at the start of winter. I put my bike in for a service (72,000k) and when I got it back it had developed this weird sensation of when the suspension rebounds it feels like it rattles a bit (or a jangly sensation). The springs were changed 5 years ago with Ohlins progressive springs suited to my weight 90kgs (0.9kg springs?)

When I took the bike back to get the new pump fitted, I asked them to change the fork oil as it hadn't been changed in that time, and they fiddled around with the rebound and preload settings.

The sensation is still there.

Here's my line of thinking:

i) the springs are past their service limit leaving a gap in the fork - ergo the rattle

possibly cured by putting a longer spacer in the line.

ii) need for new springs and refurbish

iii) something broken inside?

iv) steering head bearings? They said they adjusted them at the last service?

So far - $370 for service and "repair" to waterpump oil ring - lasted a day before it was leaking more profusely.

$377 for new water pump.

$205 for new fork oil and replacement of new waterpump.

All this for a bike that feels worse than when it went in.

Oh well, at least the waterpump isn't leaking oil anymore...................

Am I on the right track or should I just hand it over to a suspension specialist?

There could be loads of potential things to rattle about, but the chances of your springs being squished enough to rattle is very very slim. That'd mean that they've sagged aby about 6cms or something, and it's just not going to happen.

Get a mate round, get him to lift the bike up on its sidestand by putting his foot against the bottom of it and pulling like hell. You'll soon find the balance point and it'll get easier. Then one of you stand round the front and see if you can pull the forks back and forward, see if the wheel's got any play in it, see if something silly like your mudguard's loose, see if somebody's fitted a tambourine under your fairing. All of these will produce rattling noises.

Also, if you're paying for a garage to do work on your bike and the bike's coming back worse, avoid this garage.

Or howabout checking the front pads aren't rattling about?maybe the technician has forgotten to replace the pad springs?I'd do a quick nut and bolt check on the front end if i were you

I would be checking there is no play in the steering head bearings. As mentioned earlier, try and lift the front wheel of the ground and see if you can move the forks backwards/forwards and if you can see if you can find any movement at the head bearings.. If they are loose you can tighten them but then check that the bars turn smoothly to the left and right as loose bearings often damage the races and the steering then becomes lumpy as you turn the handlebars.

If the pads and headstock bearings are all OK then it could be they didn't bleed the air out of the cartridges in the forks. This has to be done and just draining the oil out and then re-filling is not enough. They do need bleeding.

How do you bleed them then?

I think you just keep pumping the cartrige through it's full stroke until it feels consistent and then re-check your oil level.

Already been in contact with Jim at Zenodamper via email. He believes that from what I've told him that it sounds like the damper rods are cactus. He has roughly quoted $370 ride in/ride out.

I'm up at Carlingford, and they're at Lidcombe, so it's only 20 mins away. Closer than going out to Shock Treatment at Wallacia.

Nah, replaced the front ones with new Bendix pads. This rattle is more linear, like up the fork and never on compression, only on rebound. I know what rattly pads or worn floating discs sound like (Brembos on a Guzzi LM)

Got the Trxie back this afternoon and what a difference. Bike now rides really well, and just falls into corners beautifully. Still has the tiniest of rattles over small continuous corrugations, but I feel this is probably more due to either the headstock bearings or the old worn out discs. Jim at Zenodamper was saying that the std TRX front suspension setup is pretty woeful, and suggested Thundercat cartridge internals, which easily fit into the TRX and still look original while offering a huge amount of adjustability over std. Next is a set of front discs and then get the rear shock sorted.

I'm as happy as........

I had a funny rattle and squeak from the front of my bandit. I overhauled the brakes - new pads and cleaned pistons, rebuilt the forks with new Ohlins springs and seals after inspecting the bushes, new caliper bolts, checked that nothing was knocking on the mudguard, checked the headlight and clock mounts - the lot. The noise improved, but was still there at times. Turned out it was my tank, moving up and down as I went over bumps, it's apparently missing a rubber mounting from the front. No idea where it went though. I blame mice.
