Carb Issues

I have an old '90 Yamaha XJ600 in absolutely minty condition.

I had to replace the exhaust system recently to one of those Motad jobs (only option) and it's gone and screwed my carburation good and proper.

I have a nasty big hole between 5500 and 7000 rpm, it then picks up and goes as hard as you would expect an old aircooled 600 too. On the original system powere was seamless, although there was a little fluffyness at low revs and a reluctance to idle when cold.

Probem is this is the area where the bike is happy cruising so any need to accelerate needs a tap dance on the gear lever. there is just no roll on at these rpm, which is really annoying.

Any ideas folks?

Sounds like it's the needle/needle jet area thats causing you problems.

Do the exhaust manufacturers have settings?

You could try altering the needle heights. This will show you if it's a rich or lean problem.

Hi mate,

In truth, anything but a dyno run with air / fuel ratio read out is guess work, I know it's a ball ache type bummer when motad do give the impression that their systems are fit and forget but a 20 - 30 quid power run will give some answers as to what is up.
