heds954
I've tried searching the interwebs, and despite numerous attempts of different search terms, all I'm getting is pages and pages of advice that I'm uncertain is applicable to my issue. On Monday I took delivery of an electric bike (bicycle, not motorbike - don't get excited), and it has two chips in the paint, just behind the folding clasp. Now, the frame is formed from magnesium, so I know full well that it definitely needs painting, to protect it. All I need to know is, what's the best way to clean and prepare the bare metal, and what solvent should I use to clean the brush? Thanks, hive mind. And yes, I have asked the manufacturers, and for my efforts, was given a very vague answer, hence asking on here. Superdunc
If it is Magnesium, and chipped to the metal, it's going to be an issue. No paint will stick to mag with out some fairly specialist treatment.

Is there some more official explanation of this somewhere, that you can point me to, that I can put in front of the manufacturer / place of purchase, so that I can put it to them? Superdunc
Google painting magnesium. You'll find better explanations than Ican give. Basically Magnesuim prevents paint bonding at a molecular level, with out special pre treatment. Localised repair is rarely sucessful for long. That's assuming it is Magnesium alloy and not a predominently aluminium ally with a bit of mag in it.

This^ is the main concern, but the other issue is what if the paint sample they've sent me to touch up, just doesn't work, and long term fucks up? I'm keeping copies of all conversations between me and them, just in case. BTW how long would it take for magnesium to 'rust' if not dealt with, and what would the symptoms be, and how far reaching would the damage be? I realise that this all sounds a bit dramatic, but I want to ensure that I cover myself and not essentially allow myself to by a 'pup' (ie a whole load of trouble - when really I could just demand within the first 14 days that I'm not happy with it and that they can sort the bloody thing out). Superdunc
Magnesium oxidizes into a white powder, will go in a couple of days if it gets wet.

I've come to the conclusion that I will phone them on Mon / Tues, and ask for their technical bod, voice my concerns and then decide whether they take it back voluntary to sort it, or that I claim my consumer rights and force them to take it back.
