6v to 12v

The electrics on my bike are 6v but its a 1982 model so its old, how easy is it to convert it to 12v, then I could have brighter lights, proper indicators, I'm assuming its not a simple task, anybody out there have any idea of what I'd need to do.

muchos grassyarse.

If it runs any sort of digital ignition, I think it may be a bit of a mare since you'll need to have 12V to stuff that'll take it, then regulate down to 6V for the CDI unit any anything else that'd fry. Also change all bulbs, relays, possibly beef up wiring, change the generator. Easier to get a new bike.

your best bet is to speak to anyone you know who's into scooters(lambrettas and vespas etc) as this is quite a common mod with them and may be able to steer you in the right direction

What's the bike and does it have electonic ignition? If it does, you're probably screwed. A 1982 bike, it could have either.

Its a Suzuki DR400, no electronic ignition as its a kick start.

definately find a scooter bloke then as someone i know has just had the dr400 engine fitted in a lambretta frame by a company that specialises in things like that, and it has all new electrics could be a kit or custom

It can still have electronic ignition on it with nothing but a push start down a hill! Electronic ignition refers to how the spark is generated, rather than how the bike is started into life in the morning; it's the ignition circuit not the starting circuit, if you see what I mean. If it has a points type ignition then it'll be a whole lot easier to convert than if it has an ECU of some sort to generate the sprk, as that'll most likely need whatever voltage it's designed to run.

Not familiar with the DR400 , but I reckon you're better off getting 6 volt halogen conversion bulb for the headlight.

I have a really old Kawasaki with marginal charging , so I used 10 or 15 watt indicator bulbs .

Have to find a new flasher can for that though.
