fzrtim
Hi all. Can any srad specialists help me with a prob my friend is having with his 600 srad. When the engine is cold there is no problem but as it warms up,when you rev it then let off the revs it makes a rattle as the revs slow down. I think it sounds like it may be the cam chain rattling, not sure if this is a problem with the srads but i have seen manual cam chain adjusters on ebay and i think my bike (not my friends) has one fitted too. Hope someone can help with my diagnoses as the dry weather is nearly here and my friend is itching to get out. Cheers Tim
Tomfoolery
I believe camchain rattle is most noticeable at low revs, then smoothes out as they rise, but I may be mistaken.
vfiend
Usually a distinct rattle is heard as the throttle is dropped from a quick blip. SRADs are of the age of bike in general that these faults seem to develop. CBR 600s were the worst for it though, i can't remember ever having to order an SRAD camchain tensioner. Manual cam chain tensioners can be a sting in the tail, if you don't bother / don't adjust properly it'll do more harm than good. Trust me changing a cam chain can be an arse (just wait till you come to rivit it). An auto camchain tensioner should last at least 16-24000 miles and only cost 60ish quid and take 45mins to fit by someone competent (i can't remember if the camchain is central or to one side on those, quicker if its to one side). If in doubt have a competent mechanic have a listen, this suggestion will piss some off, and they definately won't commit to a diagnosis but some will recognise it straight away. But its usually the cheapest of the list of possibilities. (Don't do it over the bloody phone, and ask politely, don't be expectant of anything and it helps to have a good relationship with your local bikeshop) Also some people confuse exhaust leak clicks with rattle. fzrtim
Cheers ,thats just confirmed what i thought. The rattle is just after a blip and the cam chain is to the side so fairly easy to get too.
lorenzo
See if a gsxr 600 k1 manual cam chain adjuster fits, I'm selling one for the charity bros fund on ebay, and it's very very cheap at the moment.
Andy J
Cam chain tensioners can get rattly just before the self adjust to the next notch,it may well be that. Suzukis do seem to have a liking for dodgy tensioners, especially on older oil cooled motors so it wouldnt be a suprise if they used the same type on later water cooled engines too. As has been said, manual tensioers are great in theory but will need to be adjusted once in a while. If you forget to do this then its a bit pointless having one. fzrtim
Well i fiited a new tentioner today and found out when i removed the old one that indeed this was the problem. The ratchet mechanism was not working and the tentioner in effect was just a spring. New one fitted, job sorted. Only took 25 mins to do it aswell!
