Scoob Posted October 7, 2008 Report Posted October 7, 2008 Hi All What the best way to cut a bolt, so you get nice threads on the end? yeah i know use a shorter bolt but anyway... Cheers H
Number 6 Posted October 7, 2008 Report Posted October 7, 2008 Hi All What the best way to cut a bolt, so you get nice threads on the end? yeah i know use a shorter bolt but anyway... Cheers H Wind a nut on the bolt first then use a good hacksaw and vice (clamp the waste part in the vice), when you take the nut off it cleans the threads as it goes. You might still want to touch it up with a file tho'

You might still want to touch it up with a file tho' If you want to make a nice job of it then put it in the lathe if you have an appropriate way to grip it. You can make a bush or use the right collet. Then you can turn/face it, then use the compound slide to give it a chamfer. Clean the threads up with a die and it should look like it was meant to be that length!

lorenzo Posted October 7, 2008 Report Posted October 7, 2008 I go with no 6's method, just put a couple of decent nuts on the botl, it gives you something nice to clamp onto while you cut, once it's done run round the edge with a little rats tail file, then by the time you've taken the 2 nuts off it you've got a perfectly finished bolt.

spacemonkey Posted October 8, 2008 Report Posted October 8, 2008 Hi All What the best way to cut a bolt, so you get nice threads on the end? yeah i know use a shorter bolt but anyway... Cheers H Scoob wanted the 'best way.' Do you guys honestly think that cutting with a hacksaw is the best way to do the job? Cutting in a vice with a hacksaw is sound when you have a very limited workshop but I certainly don't agree that it will give you the best result. Screws/bolts shortened this way are always more of a pain to thread squarly onto nuts, etc. They also look hideous in my opinion....
Muschi Posted October 8, 2008 Report Posted October 8, 2008 i do it free hand with an angle grinder, with or without a nut screwed onto it. get the screw with a pair of pliers, then cut it. some little work with the mentioned file, and it will look and function 100% it is a matter of practise as with everything.

Much as we'd like it.

Yeah, other methods definitely have a place 'cos you can't always have the right tool for every job and there is more than one way to skin a cat, etc. I definitely like the sound of the angle grinder better than the hacksaw. It should give a better finish. Unfortunately it'll still give you a thread with no lead on it though.
Mark/Foggy Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 Angle grinder, lathe, power tools - Titanium everbody jump for cover, sparks everywhere. LOVE IT

Marge Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 The mechanics method is as follows: 1. Ascertain desired length 2. Using engineers rule and scriber, mark the bolt inside the thread. 3. clamp the bolt in a vice, near to the mark and with the material to be removed in the jaws. 4. Take the largest adjustable wrench available and repeat step 5 until desired result is achiedved. 5. with the jaw end of the wrench, hit the fucker as hard as you can. I am available for winter servicing, good rates.
