Johnno Posted November 22 Report Posted November 22 (edited) Mate of mine is an auction lurker. He mainly buys cars to fix and flip. He rang me this morning asking for clues to fix this wheel. My immediate response was: Buy a Chinese one off Ebay. I saw one for just under 500 bucks shipped. A wrecker wants 900 for a second hand one. Old Garv's is CHEAP. He wants to fix it. He's made a jig sort of arrangement that bolts on where the disc rotor goes that will enable him to have a big bolt that he can wind down onto the dent, says he's gonna apply heat gently. He is aware of the fact that it could turn to a liquid and or crack. Nowt to lose though. My first thought was a rubber mallet. I also suggested a heat gun as opposed to fire. He bought the bike at auction and may not have seen the dent till he'd paid. Says he went to move it and the front tyre was flat. Then he noticed dent. Discuss? Edited November 23 by Johnno Quote
TLRS Posted November 23 Report Posted November 23 Looks quite pointy bend.. and shape of the lip all fooked. I wish him luck getting it back in shape. If he gets it done I hope he gets it checked by a grown up. Especially if he's going to flip it. Quote
jaycee Posted November 23 Report Posted November 23 I don't see that being fixed. At least not in a manner that I would ride anything it was fitted to. Quote
Johnno Posted November 23 Author Report Posted November 23 (edited) I agree, it looks bad. We've kicked ideas back and forth. The best effort I saw was a video of a chap made a semi circle out of timber and a used heat and a G clamp, turned out mint. Skin has made a contraption that attaches to the disc rotor bolts with a big bolt to push on the dent. He will probably end up buying that $495 Chinese wheel off Ebay. But, ya gotta know the guy, he's different, old Skinno. He hates waste, is very thrifty and likes a challenge. He said to me on the phone just now: What if we were those blokes that just hafta fix the wheel or we'll all die or some shit?? He told me the story: He was looking at this and a SuperDuke. He bid on this and didn't hang around. He bid 1250 GBP on it. It's a 2020, 12,000 klm, neat as a pin, the dent in the rim and very mild cosmetic damage, easy fix. Couple days later he gets a call ( he missed out on the SuperDuke ) he's the highest bidder. Bloke says he wants 3600 GBP. Skin told him he was crazy and his words " carried on like a pork chop, a bit " guy says he'd make a few calls. Gets back to him and says: So, 1240 GBP ? ( $2400 ) OK.. They're 30 grand AUD new here.. I'd have already ordered the Chinese wheel if it were me.. And maybe tried to fix that dented one just for the lols Edited November 23 by Johnno 1 Quote
jaycee Posted November 23 Report Posted November 23 Nope. Just nope. I just wouldn't even consider trying to repair an alloy wheel with that sort of damage. I have laid into a steel rim, that hit a huge pothole and burst a shock, with some heat and my rawhide/copper mallet. It was good enough to seat a tyre, hold air and only needed about 400kg of weights to balance it😄 it got kept as an extra spare. 1 Quote
Johnno Posted November 23 Author Report Posted November 23 As I said, my first reaction was Chinese wheel from Ebay, under 500 bucks shipped. But for clarity, it is this guy.. 3 Quote

Johnno Posted November 23 Author Report Posted November 23 Although he's sent me this, says it rolls like new. Still ordered a new China wheel. Quote
ssray Posted November 23 Report Posted November 23 I've fixed a smaller less awkward dent. Soap on the one side and heat on the other, when the soap goes black it's kinda hot enough to have annealed?) it and we bashed it straight, if it cooled too much I would have repeated it. It was a old k100 BMW wheel, which are quite soft as standard 1 Quote
Gobert Posted November 23 Report Posted November 23 It looks like he didn't use any heat? I sent a wheel away for repair recently by one of the UK specialists and the buckle was nowhere near that bad .....the spoke still cracked.....after it came back with a weld repair, it spun near perfect but I couldn't bring myself to use it knowing how it had been repaired...........into the scrap pile it went. That's the same wheel as quite a few BM's.......thought it would be easy to get one. 1 Quote
Johnno Posted November 23 Author Report Posted November 23 (edited) Like I said, he's still ordered an Ebay China wheel for $560 I think he said. I found one for $492 shipped but he couldn't get the link to work, bricklayer The one he could find at a wrecker 2nd hand was 900 bucks. Genuine would be.. I'd hate to guess. I think he;s going to get the crack welded, paint it and put it on. His Ebay wheel will be 2.5 weeks. He still needs a couple plastic pieces, a headlight and support. So plenty of time to assess. Still gonna be a cheap bike for what it is. Maybe he'll retire his 1050 Tiger and keep the 1000XR. Edited November 23 by Johnno Quote

He hoped the heat would help but that was a big sharp edged dent. Looking at the finished product I think he did rather well. Edited November 23 by Johnno Quote
TLRS Posted November 23 Report Posted November 23 The chinesium wheel is probably made of lower grade recycled aluminium. Really like thriftyness but personally I’d chicken out when it comes to bike parts. 1 Quote
marvin Posted November 23 Report Posted November 23 Tell him to stop being a tightwad. Nice set of aftermarket lightweight OZ wheels is what’s needed. Quote

Johnno Posted November 23 Author Report Posted November 23 You should see the home made exhaust on his Tiger 1050... I reckon he's fixing it to keep. Skin is a 61 year old bricklayer who routinely puts a bag of cement in the top box of his Triumph. He also makes McGiver look like a chick taking her car to the dealership when comes to backyard bodgery. More often than not though he does it ingeniously. 2 Quote

Johnno Posted Saturday at 07:58 AM Author Report Posted Saturday at 07:58 AM I asked if he'd painted it, he said no, he's still riding it around the hood to see if he wants to keep it. Reckon's it got a lotta powah. Quote
