Looking after bare alloy

Recommended Posts

I have a pretty expensive, trick looking Niko Bakker swingarm on my SRAD. It was originally made for a K7 GSXR so was black when I acquired it. I had it blasted and then polished up to a scotchbrite look.

I took the bike in to be wrapped a few weeks ago and when trailering it back, it was pissing down. I then took it off the trailer and dumped it in the garage where it has sat untouched for a week or two/three.

Pulled it out of the garage today into the warm sunshine to find the arm with a nice furry coating, so set about cleaning it using wd40 and a scotchbrite pad, then wiping with a cloth. This has got it looking relatively healthy again but I want to know if there are any better ways of keeping it looking good. I thought about a clearcoat but thought that may leave it looking a bit too glossy

Any hints/tips ?

Only hints exchange for pics, obvs.. ;)

Was there any salt on the road? If you're not going to drag it through the wet/salt again, I don't think it'll need much. Or if you really have to, I'd anodise it. Don't think clearcoat will be your friend on bare alloy.. when it chips.

My zx9r is completely scotchbrite’d and I just coat it with acf50, it’s fantastic stuff.

Can it be used on polished alloy with out staining it. I want to use it for the diesel tank on my truck.

I'd imagine so, it's just lubricant and corrosion inhibitor, but try it somewhere unobtrusive first.
