Custom Exhaust Link Pipe.

Hi Guys,

I'm nearing the end of my FZR400/600 hybrid project, to put the engine from an FZR600R Foxeye into an FZR400 chassis.

The main thing left to do is get the exhaust can to mount where it should! The 600 exhaust system brings the can out far too low.

So I need a custom link pipe to bring the can up, the tricky bit is that the full Micron system has a 2.5" bore to the pipe, which is quite big apparently....

Can anyone point me in the direction of an exhaust manufacturer or general all round good guy who can fabricate said pipe?

Any help, or witty replies gratefully received. :o

you could try these guys

http://www.predatorexhaust.co.uk/

apparently they'll make any exhaust for anything to order.

never used them personally though years ago I used to know a guy that works for them, and I used to take my bike there for MOTs.

might be worth a try

Thanks for the suggestions, but I knew I'd forget something!

Preferably in North Kent, or at a push Kent/Essex/Sussex area.

I like the idea of DIY, but I've never used a welder in my life....

it looks from the picture like you could just put a bend in the existing link pipe to bring the can into a sensible place - might be difficult for you to do it yourself if it is 2.5" (i've got a cheap hydraulic pipe bender but it only has dies up to 2"), but it's probably cheaper to get someone to bend it for you than to make a new link pipe.

Have a go, worst case is it doesn't work and you have to get a new one made anyway.

Regarding predator - I've got a stainless system from them for the GS400 - it's quite nicely made, but they've been bloody lazy about fitting the pipes close to the engine, so it grounds out really badly. One of my jobs to do on the GS is to tweak that into shape and make a new link pipe.

What would you need to weld? Normally the link pipe has slices cut into each end across the diagonal of its bore so that it then sleeves over the ends of the pipes it is joining and tightens with a jubilee clip. The only place you may end up welding could be on the hanger, but I'd have thought that would be done without welding??

This is the arrangement of the Scorpion can on my old SV650. The s/steel strap bolts onto a hanger which is fixed to the footrest mounts.

Looks like one of the bends from the site Tom suggested might do the trick!

2.5inch bends

All you'd need then is to fix the can to the footrest.

Only worry with your system is that the length of the can means that the bend will need to be quite close to the rearsets.

Well, I've been looking at the Jetex website and it's got me thinking, not a good idea!!

Then I saw the flexible pipe and that was it. Parts have been ordered, bends and flexible, we shall see......

If you bend it yourself, plug the ends of the pipe, pack it as tight as you can with fine, wet sand.

sounds daft, but this acts as an internal support, and helps stop the pipe kinking or collapsing. you will probably need a hydraulic bender (?) too*. These can be picked up fairly cheap on ebay.

Do it yourself. Imagine the satisfaction!!

*You might not be able to. I have NEVER cruised the internet looking for a bender. No really, I haven't.

Hi Guys,

Well, a box arrived on Friday from Jetex with some 2.5" pipe bends, so lots of today (after watching the GP) was spent in the garage!

The best fit seemed to be the 45 degree bend.

I'm not too sure about this and I do have a couple of other ideas, but it will do until after the MOT!

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Looks really neat. Good work, fella. Only slight worry I would have about leaving the job as it is whether you need to tweak the end of the tailpipe to discourage rainwater entering the system. If the bike is parked in a big downpour, then the end as it is could work as a mini funnel! Maybe the end could be cut back so that the top edge overhangs the lower part just to help a bit?? As a quick fix, you could always get one of those bungs that they sell so that you can hose off your bike without getting water into the exhaust.... Just remember to take the fucker out before running the engine!

Just a quick thing on a unralted subject matter. The air filters you've got fitted, the little pod type ones, are they the cheapy ones off ebay? I fitted a pair onto my TRX some time back. Stock airbox gave 75hp at the wheel, proper K&N pods 81hp, cheapo ebay pods 50something hp. This was, obviously, just through 2 of them, you've got 4 on there, so they should be less of a restriction, but I honestly just think that they're for looks/Tractor owners, and aren't actually a performance filter as such. I'd also wonder if they were actually a filter at all, rather than just a bit of fabric sandwiched between some gauze that looks like a filter. Steer well clear if it's a long term bike. I've just bought a set of foam 'ram air' filters for my kat for £80 for the set, which isn't exactly expensive and I know with 100% certainty that they'll let the engine breath properly and they'll stop wasps being sucked into the carbs. Buy cheap, buy twice.

Those pods are the cheap ones from ebay (Shark branded £35 all 4 from Greece, IIRC), but they are only there to get the bike going.

I intend to modify the standard airbox to fit over winter, cos at the moment it won't fit under the tank!
