alext Posted January 22, 2021 Report Posted January 22, 2021 So Im getting to the stage of bodywork prep for my VF/VFR thing and one of the remaining issues I have is the fuel-cap, in that I dont have a key for it. so, PB-Collective, anyone know anyone who could make me a key?? you cant remove the barrel and adjust the tumblers without wrecking the cap, as it has a metal cover that is crimped all around the top, covering the lock mechanism. the ignition key I have, fits, but doesnt turn. I have cleaned and lubed the lock in the hope it was just sticky, but it still doesnt want to play. People are telling me that it is possible to make a key - dont see how without removing the lock barrel. Anyone any suggestions? Quote

Best off finding another working locking cap with key off flea bay as your current lock is quite possibly fukkered/proper key lost. You can then look at the replacement lock and study how best to remove the original imho 1 Quote
alext Posted January 22, 2021 Author Report Posted January 22, 2021 Cheers for this! and yes thank fuck its old-school without HISS or other rf-coded shite! the problem is that these caps seem to be quite rare (and consequently expensive). the tank is not the original for the bike, so the cap almost almost definitely needs a different key - when I bought the bike I picked the best tank out of the 4 the guy had, it also was the only one with a cap. an Ebay cap n ignition set with key is the wrong side of £100 so £20 or £30 to get a key is not an issue! heads off to peruse local locksmiths......... 1 Quote
Timbo S2 Posted January 22, 2021 Report Posted January 22, 2021 Do you need a lock? Just fit a keyless cap? 1 Quote

lorenzo Posted January 22, 2021 Report Posted January 22, 2021 16 minutes ago, Timbo S2 said: Do you need a lock? Just fit a keyless cap? Exactly this. I've a 'race style' cap for about £15 off ebay. I also plan on getting one of those M-Unit keyless ignition things at some point too, so I'll have literally no keys to the bike other than the dirty great chain I keep at work. I don't have any decent pictures of the cap, but you can see what I mean from this hopefully Quote
alext Posted January 22, 2021 Author Report Posted January 22, 2021 No, I dont need (or want) a lock and would love to fit one of these caps, but the one on this tank is of a type that these generic ones dont fit. (not my tank but a good picture of the cap and how it fits - its hinged at the rear) If anyone has a dead tank from a recent(ish) CBR/GSXR/ZX and is willing to cut the filler-neck and about 50mm of surrounding tank-top out for me, Id be willing to pay for it! I could then fit a generic £20 one and be very happy. Anything that I can get one of these generic caps for would be fine. The raised area makes it easier for me to attach the new bit to this tank and make it look good. 1 Quote

Thunderbolt Posted January 22, 2021 Report Posted January 22, 2021 We used to get a long thin rod and by going up from the fuel sender or petrol tap hole, fiddle about until we could flip the triangular catch. IYSWIM? Is the pivot is a roll pin? You can drill that. the pivot plate has two screws? If you don’t want a locking cap, then drill the lock. Quote
Evilchicken0 Posted January 22, 2021 Report Posted January 22, 2021 (edited) I used Motorcycle Lock Repairs on facebook - good quick service. I sent him a fuel cap to be changed to an ignition key. https://m.facebook.com/MLR4u/ You might have to send him the tank. Alternatively search for a auto locksmith close to you Edited January 22, 2021 by Evilchicken0 Quote
