Guest bikertiger Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 Started to notice the gearbox being very clunky and having a very mechanical feel Rather than a smoooth shift between gears, it's all sounds very 'clunky' More so between 1st and 2nd Need to give it a good boot full to change??...
thefatman Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 Hows the chain looking on your bike, properly adjusted and lubed up?
Guest bikertiger Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 Hows the chain looking on your bike, properly adjusted and lubed up? Had the chain done the other day - He said it was looking a little 'tight' and loosened it a bit - And I lubed it today......
Godzilla Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 I am pretty sure that clunking is standard. I have spoke to a couple of people and they all have that clunky 1st and second gear thing. I think 1st is like that to stop you dropping it in if you don't really mean it. Might be wrong though infact might end up in a shower of gearbox the next time i go out.
roadracer Posted September 25, 2008 Report Posted September 25, 2008 Check the oil level obviously, and if it's not far off, I'd suggest an oil change if it hasn't been done recently(within 1000mi). It could also be your clutch adjustment with too much free-play.. Check that too. Could be the cold weather if you're experiencing any. Use a good 10w40 in your next winter oil+filter change if it's not filled with that already. Oh and just a quick thought(was it you that got caught speeding heavily recently??!) if you're using less revs(to avoid speeding, y'see) =) the bike won't change as smoothly as it does in the higher rev range especially at lower street speeds....
Guest bikertiger Posted September 25, 2008 Report Posted September 25, 2008 How many miles on the bike? 10,100 This morning it 'slips' into 'N' instead of second and it's a good bootful to get it into second?
marcaztls Posted September 25, 2008 Report Posted September 25, 2008 10,100 This morning it 'slips' into 'N' instead of second and it's a good bootful to get it into second? Not very many miles then... Well assuming your chain, oil and clutch are all okay, my next step would be to whip the shift shaft cover off and inspect all the components in there. Shift shaft assembly and the shift drum where the shaft engages with it. Hopefully it's wear in there and easily fixable from the outside of the motor. If not, I would say it's a shift drum groove and selector fork/shaft problem. Sorry mate Does the bike get wheelied a lot with gear changes?
Hendo Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 My old 2000 R6 used to be quite clunky between 1st and 2nd, only hit neutral a handfull of times in the 2 years I had it though. Bought it with 6000miles and sold it with 18,000miles and the clunkyness never changed. I just thought it was a yamaha thing.
biker jay Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 My trx always clunks real heavy from 1st to second and back, been doing it since i got it in 2003. Like you said, might be a yamaha thing.
Guest bikertiger Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 Does the bike get wheelied a lot with gear changes? lol.....clearly you've never seen me ride! No, I can safely say in my hands anyway. The bikes never been wheelied! The front did left about an inch the other day mind... I 'think' I know what the problem is..... I'm not riding the bike enough On my euro trip where I was doing 'proper' miles instead of quick 10 mile blasts to work etc. The bike run fine. Still not as sweet as my Suzuki engined Cagiva Thou Though I'm lead to believe Suzuki making pretty 'sweet' gear boxes?
ronenige Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 take the gear change rod off and make sure your gear lever can move freely , if not strip and clean it , makes a hell of a difference , also common on suzukis , kawasakis , harris rear sets etc also make sure the gear lever is in the right position and your foot is clearing the lever everytime , common problem when people have had new boots
rossm Posted October 14, 2008 Report Posted October 14, 2008 Had the chain done the other day - He said it was looking a little 'tight' and loosened it a bit - And I lubed it today...... When you say have the chain done, did you mean replaced as in along with the sprockets, only asking as standard Yamaha front sprocket comes with a plastic/rubber insert which cushions things down somewhat, normally noticed with after market ones by making a little bit more noise, but could be the reason as to why you are feeling what you are
ChrisH Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 Cush drive ??? Just a thought. At 10000 miles without replacement i'd say this was a good call. My 748 was a little clunky (not as bad as the Blade though!!!!) but after a new chain and new cush drive rubbers it was as smooth as 'Face' (of A-Team fame)
