On a test track in the new Volvo FH, together with test drivers you get to experience how the Collision Warning with Emergency Brake system can avoid a rear end collision, even if its tight!

The tractor trailer is fully loaded to 40 tons GCW.

I think he's put a nasty flat spot in those tyres, mind. Still, anything that helps lorry drivers to wank more whilst working has got to be a good thing, right?

That was great, cant wait to see it on the road and how many cars run into the back of the truck, and each other.

Tech is fantastic.

I'm all for it, if anyone hits the lorry up the arse, that's their fault, but the car in the last video, I guarantee 99% of drivers who glanced in their nmirror and say that thing loming at them would've panic braked and it would still have piled in to it.

Yeah the usual people that don't have a fucking clue how to drive...

They can stop very quick and its a bit scary

Full EBS/ABS on both unit and tralier dont forget in the video the driver is not touching the brake pedal.

In 18 years driving artics i can say i have only had to use full braking twice, once fully loaded (44ton) and once partloaded. scared the shit out of me

A few years ago now, I was in my little Daf 45 7.5 tonner & I had a sheet of 2500x1250x6mm m/steel in the box at the back near the door, I was driving along at around 45 when a stupid bitch over took me & then stood on the brakes to get slowed down enough to turn into her drive, how the hell I did'nt hit her I don't know BUT the sheet of steel slid forwards all the way up the lorry & punctured a 10" gash in the front of the box body going through around 20mm of ply sandwiched by alloy plate on each side.

So after seeing that stop the loads will need to be much better secured or they will be coming through the back of the cab or off the sides.

The lorry driver would defiantly spill his piss bottle with that tech!

Before my accident I have worked for haulage companies for about 15yrs loading, shunting and occasionally driving them on the road and lost count of the number of times I would brake and a bottle of piss would come rolling out from below the seat! Each time I would pick them up with gloves when I got back to the yard and walk into the transport office and dump it on the counter with the drivers name on it... Fecking disgusting!

it is disgusting but if your caught in a traffic jam & busting what choice have you, I have pee'd 100's of times & on the very odd occasion a crap when working in the fields on the tractor all day in harvest/drilling time you are doing 18+ hour days & it just not possible to come home some times, it's not pleasant but again what choice have you.

Amazing. Must be some serious heat generated there. The tyres must be the limiting factor with that tech now, you can have all the braking power in the world but it's no good if you can't put it to the road.

I suppose this shows how 44ton pressing down on the tyres (well, the respective axle loads not all 44 ton) and lightning fast braking response systems can work. They got this test right unlike the latest s60 launch with a similar system!

Truly amazed!

You've got 10 massive tyres in contact with the road. There's a lot of inertia in 40 tonnes + trailer and rig, but there's a shitload of tyre-road contact.

Similarly with cars....the vast majority of drivers don't realise just how hard their vehicles can stop. Which is why manufacturers fit Emergancy Braking Assistance...the drivers don't press hard enough on the brake pedals in real life situations. If you ever accidentally activate the EBS then you better be holding onto the wheel....I remember doing it in a Merc CLK and I thought I was going to headbutt the screen.

This^^^^ in a truck you better have your seatbelt on because there is now way you will stay in your seat

Yeah I agree, but 10 ditchfinders wouldn't allow it to pull up as well as 10 brand new Michelins for example. What I was alluding to was that with a few more years tyre tech I'm sure we'll see them pulling up even harder.
