Kr-1s Freshen Up

Well, it's too cold to ride it so I have decided to freshen up my modified Kr-1s. This is my road bike, but the modifications are with a view to taking it on the track sometime.

This is how it currently looks-

I am hoping to lose some weight from it but unfortunately it gained several kilos almost immediately.....

The plans are- To fit the single seat unit (seen hanging up behind the bike)

To fit these-

Upgrade the radiator with this Tedium one-

I already have an R6 shock fitted but the spring is a little soft- this Fazer spring will be swapped over.

I also need to relocate the battery (I'll probably get a Li Po one).

It also needs a damn good clean.

I'm also going to have a go at painting the fairings (don't worry, they aren't genuine ones!)

How much of this will get done I have no idea, wish me luck!

Looks like you've already got a ZXR400 or similar front end on it, yeah?

Looks good!

Should be a nice progession there with the planned updates.

Keep us posted with lots of pics!

At least that'll stop unwanted passengers! Is that a braced standard swinging arm?

Keep up the good work :icon_salut:

Yes, it is a braced standard swingarm, now housing an RGV wheel (17" for better tyre choice).

It is a zxr400L front end with gsxr calipers. It stops quite well!

There is a member of the KR-1s forum who is replicating that bodywork and paint scheme for his KR-1s racer. It is going to look fantastic.

Nobody has tried replicating the upsidedown 250 two stroke engine yet, that might prove a challenge!

That is bloody lovely. Soft spot for the KR1S's, first bike I rode post test and first to scare the bejesus out of me when it came on 'song':icon_salut:

I passed my test on a KR-1. It was snowing on my test day, with ice on the roads. Great bike, when it wasn't destroying cylinders and breaking fairing stays.

What's the history on that 250 racer with the weirdly configured engine?

Very little information about it, unfortunately it wasn't very successful and was quietly canned.

This is the best I could find-

Well, I've now stripped out the shock so I can get the spring swapped over.

A frankly rubbish shot of the shock in situ-

kr1s22012012003.jpg

But you should be able to see the amount of airbox that needs to be removed to make it fit.

Having taken out the R6 shock I can see it is different to the other one I have.

kr1s22012012005.jpg

I have seen several other R6 shocks, but they all look the same as the one with the red spring. The red spring one is definitely from an 07 R6, might the gold spring one be from a later R6? (don't be misled by the gold spring, it has been powdercoated).

kr1s22012012007.jpg

It looks a little less bulky at the top so wouldn't need so much cutting of the airbox.

Any Yam R6 experts on here?

Cheers,

Mike

Well, progress has been slow, but I've done a couple of bits. The new R6 shock with the stiffer spring is in (now too stiff) and I've made a start painting the tailpiece

A bit more progress-

I've fitted the overbored carbs that I have had sitting in the garage for about 3 years.icon_redface.gif

These are some standard Kr-1s pwk 28's that have been offset bored to 29.5mm (the biggest you can go).

I actually spent the time to clean them out and set them up properly;- set float heights, balanced the throttles etc. - something I had never got round to doing before .eusa_doh.gif It started 1st kick, something it never did before........

I've had to take a bit of a guess at jetting* as there is not a lot of information around about this modification. I'm going to take it out for a spin tomorrow to see how it goes.

Wish me luck!

Mike

*Unless I'm remembering my physics all wrong, the larger bore will mean the air is travelling more slowly over the jets- this means I will need larger jets (I think).

The engine is a Graham File tune with Tz pistons. It runs on premix.

I've gone up from 40 to 42 pilot jets and from 140 to 142 main jets with a 99 needle.

hi mate - what did you do to get the rgv wheel to fit?

It is a good fit- you just need to make up some spacers. There's a good link Here with dimensions of the spacers you need.

I've also just fitted these- I think they are early gibson pipes.

On the bike (sorry for the poor photo)

They sound great, although the neighbours don't seem so keen......

Well, I just took it out for a spin.

F**k Me, what a difference.

It picks up much more readily from low revs and starts coming on strong at around 7k. There is a bit of a flat spot at around 8k but after that it just takes off, screaming up to an indicated 11.5k before tailing off. Before it was always a bit laboured getting above 10k, so I used to short shift a lot.

Not any more , it is there in an instant, pulling much harder than it ever used too.

The problem is, I can't be sure what has caused this transformation, because I have changed three things at once.

1. It could be the fact the carbs have actually been set up properly (I reckon that has improved the starting and low down pull)

2. It could be the extra flow of the 29.5mm carbs (could explain the better top end)

3. Or it could be the Gibson exhausts.

Or it could be a combination of all three.

All I know is that I am well chuffed!

Don't forget to plug chop it before you go too mad!

Hmm, I'm a bit concerned about that as well. I reckon I might need to increase my main jet size, I'd rather run too rich rather than too lean.kitykilldare_avatar.jpg
