Helicoil

Stripped a thread on my Honda CX500B.

The M10 bolt shank's diameter = 6mm so I've drilled out the old thread using an over-sized 6.3mm drill bit as recommended by Tracey Tools on the phone yesterday.

I've tried an M6 x 1mm tap but it just slots in the hole without cutting any thread - pls advise which tap size I should use ?

Cheers.

Dont quite understand what you are trying to do! You have snapped off a m10 bolt?? If you are attempting to helicoil you need a M10 helicoil kit which you should get a drill and specific tap. You should try and EZ out or drill out the old bolt. The drill for the helicoil is bigger than 10mm. Use this drill to open out the whole for the helicoil tap, tap out hole and insert helicoil!

Or are you refering to a M6 bolt with a 10mm hex head??

An M6 helicoil uses something like an M7 tap, they are supplied with the Helicoil thread repair kit.

If you get stuck i have a kit you can use (i'm in South Cheshire)

As said... an M10 bolt with a 6mm shank?????

If it is an M6X1 you've gone too big with a 6.3 drill no wonder you can't cut a thread. 5mm is the tapping drill for an M6x1 thread. Whoever you spoke to at Tracy tools must have misheard what you were saying. 6.3 is a nothing size don't think I've ever seen an M7x.7 thread used which is what 6.3 would be used for or as a clearance hole for an M6 bolt.

I suspect the m10 reference is a red herring and at a guess it's an m6 bolt but with a 10mm head?

This is the point > you're over here>

The OP is helicoiling, not drilling and tapping the original material.

Drill out the old damaged thread, whatever size it is, with a drill size larger than the original thread as supplied/recommended by the helicoil kit. Tap it out with the helicoil tap (not a normal tap). Wind helicoil in with helicoil tool. Snap Tang off. Job jobbed.

I'm not over there the OP is, a helicoil kit comes with the correct tapping drill and tap, if it was one of the other make kits you can get now they'd at least say what the tapping drill and tap was. Drilling the hole way oversize and trying to retap with a standard M6 tap doesn't exactly show the OP has a grasp of what he's doing, Tracy tools were obviously giving him a tapping drill size for the insert he's supposed to be using.
