laney Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 Hi all,ive got a cr500 motorcross bike that i want to convert to a supermoto, and use it on the road.Does anyone know the process to go through. My dad road registered a kx250 about 10 years ago,and although we can remember it being a piece of piss,im wondering if the rules have changed?? Any help or info would be great!!
GREENGOATCHOKER Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 firstly don't do it . secondly to do it is easy . get the frame number and write to the honda owners club which is in ware hertfordshire i believe . they will charge you about £40 or so quid for a letter to prove the bikes year of manufacture . next get the bike mot'd and insured . then write to the dvla providing all the above and ask for an age related plate . for a q plate do same just ignore the honda bit . the above applies assuming the bikes over ten years , otherwise i think you may be asked to go through an sva test .
chrisexup Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 I believe that it's easiest to register an enduro bike so i would register the CR before you do the supermoto conversion. Any other bike needs to go through that TUV style super MoT, is it SVA? An enduro bike just needs a standard MOT though, so you won't even need to fit lights (you just need a horn, speedo and rear reflector for daytime MOT ). To qualify as an enduro bike the bike has to be tall with knobblies iirc - i'll see if i can find some more concrete info for ya.
chrisexup Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 Zoomer posted this on the Visordown forum back in 2005; "You will need : Form V55/5 from your local DVLA office - form V55/4 for a new bike, but easier in these cases to ask your dealer to do the registration for you Confirmation of year of manufacture of the bike - £25 plus VAT from Honda UK - 01753 590500 Certificate of newness, confirming that VAT was paid at first importation - should have been given to the first owner when the bike was purchased from a main dealer, but as it was never envisaged that many of these bikes would end up on the road, the dealer very often kept hold of this paperwork - if you can't find the original dealer, try Honda UK with your frame and engine numbers and they should be able to trace the main dealer the bike was supplied to The payment - currently £38 registration fee and £45 road tax (12 months) On the form V55/5, fill in the following sections only : Taxation class - Bicycle Make Model Type of body/vehicle Colour Date from which licence is to run Type of fuel VIN/chassis/frame number Engine number Cylinder capacity Year of manufacture And on the reverse Your personal details as they should appear on the V5 And most importantly, the exemption information - quote the following in the space where is asks "Is the vehicle exempt from Type Approval ?", and asks the reason for exemption Enduro motorcycle - seat height is above 900mm, ground clearance is above 310mm The DVLA refer to the exemption as being for 'enduro' motorcycles......don't confuse them by using different words such as supermoto, road bike etc etc......use the same words they use and quote their own legislation at them A visit to a local office is usually best to talk through a case with a helpful member of staff there......and when you find one, get their name, and address all future correspondence to that individual, private and confidential If your local office isn't playing ball, then Northampton office comes with glowing recommendations from satisfied customers - do it all Special Delivery with them, and you should have your docs almost as soon as walking into an office anyway"
GREENGOATCHOKER Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 Thanx,is that your cr above? ^^^ yes it was and the new owner registered it as above . buy one thats already done will save you a fortune . but would advise you try one first . as the cr is not realy suited to road work and is a real pig to start . not all bad news the end result is quite alarming . how tall heavy are you ?
chrisexup Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 Looks like you don't even need the speedo for the MoT, so just a battery pushbike horn from Halfords, a reflector and some road legal knobblies and job done. http://www.visordown.com/forum/forummessag...t/4/UTN/165863/ http://www.visordown.com/forum/forummessag...t/4/UTN/198731/

Pistol-Pete Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 Thankyou for all the info people, just need to work out the pro`s and con`s or look out for one allready done! And having just been through all of the same red tape trying to register a kit car,im not sure if my ticker can take all the stress again so soon!!! Do emissions not play a bitch of a part in road registering a crosser? I thought the amount of crap spewed from the tailpipe of a 500 two stroke was quite phenominal in terms of co2, and you need some kind of wizard to custom-build a cat-pipe? Maybe not, but i'd have a gander first....Could prove to be the most costly part of the process.
Superdunc Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 I hear the Enduro bike loop hole hase been tightened up in the last few months. You need to prove membership of a recognised enduro club, and have insurance that covers you for competitve ude in public areas. Anybody had any exsperience of this?
laney Posted January 7, 2009 Author Report Posted January 7, 2009 Ive decided im gona have a go at it,just got to put the bloody thing together!! As chrisexup suggested, ill try to register it as an enduro bike first,so ill keep everone posted on how many hoops i have to jump through!! Thanx to everone for the info...

laney Posted February 9, 2009 Author Report Posted February 9, 2009 Would it matter if the frame was newer than the engine for road registering,as ive got hold of an 04 crf450 frame, which ive modified to fit my 91 500 engine into.Ill try and post some pictures up in the project section soon!!
laney Posted April 5, 2009 Author Report Posted April 5, 2009 Ive finished building it,so now ive just got to register it.And its quite easy to start!!!
wavydavy Posted April 5, 2009 Report Posted April 5, 2009 Looks *fucking* good - I had to re-readd thethread to work out where you'd got a 'new' CR5 with CRF450 plastics from.... Have either the motor or frame been road registered before? If either has then you may have an easier ride. If not, I just wish you well. Dave
laney Posted April 9, 2009 Author Report Posted April 9, 2009 The frame and engine have not been registered, but while i put a few miles on it in mx trim,im keeping a look out for a crf450x frame.Thats the road legal version of the mx bike,so it would save me some paperwork!!
