Startr motor rebuild kits

I'm after a rebuild kit for my new-but-horrible-looking-bought-off-ebay starter motor. I figure it's always going to be a bit tired as it's about 20 years old, but while it's out and I'm tinkering, I could fit a new set of bushes etc while I'm at it. But I've no idea where to start other than the explaination in the haynes of how to do it. Anybody?

You wont find a "kit" for it, brushes are about the only thing you can actually replace the rest is a general clean including the commutator surface (where the brushes touch) you then start to get into rewind territory which you need a specialist for. Clean it all up and see if it works OK now before you start to mess with it.

Yep, brushes and bearings are about all you'll replace in there. I always mark the case for proper reassembly, for lining up the bolts and to make sure I put the Caps on the correct ends (if you put it together backwards the motor spins backwards :eusa_dance: ) They usually have plain or needle roller bearings which I grease while its apart, and you will want to clean up the commutator with some light sandpapering or if it is grooved where the brushes were riding you can get it turned. After that you'll have a starter that's practically new! :icon_puke_r:

Oh I should add you dont need to replace the bearings unless they're crapped out. Good Luck!

Where do you get the new brushes from?

Where do you get the new brushes from?

There was someone on american ebay flogging starter motor rebuild kits. At least it came up on a search for my CBR600.

Bear in mind though, that they tend to call their bikes "macho" names, like hurricane.

they do do them though.

Coolio. I'd been trying searches for 'starter kit' etc, as soon as I did a search for brushes it came up with A: cleaning equipment B: starter motor bits. Ta muchly, I think, should the bits be available, I've all the info I need.
