Steelsey Posted August 28, 2010 Report Posted August 28, 2010 Went on a ride today and the bike stopped, after replacing the fuse I started the bike and instantly the SAPC unit began smoking like a chimney!!!! Why would this happen! what would cause it??? I really do not want to replace the unit for it to happen again :-O
speedy sie Posted August 28, 2010 Report Posted August 28, 2010 could be the power vale moter has gone?
Steelsey Posted August 29, 2010 Author Report Posted August 29, 2010 could be the power vale moter has gone? Yeah never thought about that, will check it later, I was wondering if the regulartor might be the cause! I noticed some acid from the battery had squirted out and its a new bat!
rgvneil Posted August 29, 2010 Report Posted August 29, 2010 as the rgv uses a sealed battery there shouldn't be anything coming out of it so maybe the reg/rec has failed although that shouldn't make the sapc unit fail.
paul g Posted August 29, 2010 Report Posted August 29, 2010 RGV 250 on Fire!!! Some people might say its the best thing that could happen to an RGV, not me of course Dont know about the RGV but NSR 250's have a habit of doing this to the PGM if the powervalves seize from carbon build up which burns out the P/V motor and then burns out the PGM. Could be similar, worth checking the powervalves.
Steelsey Posted August 29, 2010 Author Report Posted August 29, 2010 The battery wasn't factory sealed! I had to fill it when I bought it and the plastic cover that sits on top of the cells is were the seepage was! As for the PV's they are new cougar red ones in a fresh set of barrels that have done 46 miles!!! I bloody hate electrics! I've ordered a new SAPC unit and will test my regulator. Other than that I've not got a clue how to make sure the wiring is ok
mick750 Posted August 30, 2010 Report Posted August 30, 2010 pictures man we want pictures ! alright rich !
Steelsey Posted August 30, 2010 Author Report Posted August 30, 2010 "Get an Ignitech or Zeeltronic." What are they ? SAPC's? Where would I find one?
cagimaha Posted August 30, 2010 Report Posted August 30, 2010 They're aftermarket ignition units/CDI whatever you want to call them. I've not had any experience with the ignitech units but have heard plenty of people talk favorably of them. Zeeltronic are made by a guy called Borut, he's got a website here and if you're only using the bike as a road bike then they're spot on. It allows you to make your own ignition map completely from scratch or modify an exisiting map. They're basically like a power commander for two stroke iginitions. I know a couple of people who have them on 350 powervalves and the difference over stock is amazing, I think the stock iginition maps on the Yamahas were very conservative to stop people blowing them up running 2 star fuel and hot plugs. If you're willing to run super unleaded and some 9 or 10 heat range plugs then you can squeeze a bit more power just from the ignition advance.
2T Institue Posted August 31, 2010 Report Posted August 31, 2010 Why would the Zeeltronic "only be good for a road bike" ? I have used quite a few on race bikes and they work a treat. Steelsy search the RGV forum and you will have heaps of answers + a wiring diagram. The Ignitech and Zeeltronic arms race only gives the consumer a better product.
Steelsey Posted August 31, 2010 Author Report Posted August 31, 2010 Thanks for the advice. I'm going to keep it standard for now, ebay a cheap SAPC and apparently I'll need to get a CDI and reg for it.... Bugar!
mick750 Posted August 31, 2010 Report Posted August 31, 2010 put a wanted ad in the pinboard section you never no !
cagimaha Posted August 31, 2010 Report Posted August 31, 2010 Why would the Zeeltronic "only be good for a road bike" ? I have used quite a few on race bikes and they work a treat. Sorry that's not how I meant it to come out, I meant that I only know of people using them on road bikes and could vouch that they were a good upgrade in that respect. Apologies for any confusion.
