Can anyone recomend an air sander suitable for contoured surfaces of bike panels, and please excuse this dumb ass question, can you get wet&dry pads for use with them?

I can't answer the question, but it's something I'd like to know about, as I've got a good bit of sanding to do and a compressor sat here waiting. I know thefatman had a mate who came round and whipped a really nice sander with a fairly small head out the back of his van (he works for a 'chips away' type company) and it brought my tank up a treat. The actual abrasive was held on by velcro I think. Either way, it did a lovely job.

Same train of thought as you then fella, ive been rubbing down panels all day, theres gota be an easier way that requres less effort.

yes they do an air sander with a foam base i think you can get cheapish ones from sealy they do finer grades of paper too so you should be able to get them off of fraud bay relatively cheaply.

Yes.

You need one of these: http://www.metabo.co.uk/Product-catalogue-...6800f348.0.html

Brilliant bit of kit

How about an air one though alex?

I'm used one on a (steel) tank before. I'm guessing for fairings, it would need to be small, and you'd need to be gentle with it. Would be good though.

Is being a randon orbital critical? And bodywork experts know?

We use 'palm' sander D/A's at work for prepping steelwork for powder coating. I'd always go for D/A or Random Orbit for smooth uniform finish before paint.

Here's the palm sander: http://www.tooled-up.com/Product.asp?PID=27995

We use this on small awkward shaped fabrications: http://www.tooled-up.com/Product.asp?PID=27984

edit to add: Apologies for not seeing the 'air' bit of 'air sander' in the o.p. It was 5 a.m., should've been :icon_salut:

as for the d/a air sander, have use loads and 3m palm is the best, this is one of them things that the more you pay the better they get,and a cheep £60 are ok,but once you have used the 3m one it is like silk and so controable.

So, what you are saying is, you can get powder coating done on the cheap :eusa_think:

Arse.

Oh well, I was planning to get the tackle to do it myself. Nothing as big as frames, but wheels maybe.

That small mini one looks like it'll do the job :icon_salut:

Grantham-ish. I was at the Newark autojumble this morning, and found a guy in Grantham that offers powdercoating. I'll try and get set up myself, but if not I might try there.
