monty_zac Posted November 19, 2008 Report Posted November 19, 2008 I am replacing the fork seals on a TDM850, everything is going well, just until I have got to the point where I need to seperate the forks, manual says to use a slide hammer motion holding the fork leg and pulling the other part up hard. I have been trying for ages not getting anywhere, I have removed the thin clip that holds the seal in place, but nothing, doesnt feel like anything is happening. Is there an easier way to do this? Can I change the seal with the leg in situ, prise the seal out with a screwdriver? Bike is sold and going soon so I dont have time on my side! Need to get it MOTed and taxed and she is away, shame as its a very good bike just not for me.
lorenzo Posted November 19, 2008 Report Posted November 19, 2008 So long as the circlip is out of the top of the seal then you've done all you need to. Get two of you, one either end, and yank like fuck. Drain the oil out before and so you can get some real momentum on it. If it's still not coming, get a bit of heat round the top of the fork slider. This is certainly one of those brute force jobs.
monty_zac Posted November 19, 2008 Author Report Posted November 19, 2008 yank away then? one think worries me is that on the owners site it says the bottom bush does get damaged during this process, never had that before and havent got time to buy new parts. eek... I am gonna stop being a poof with it and just go ahead, whats the worst that can happen.......
addiction269 Posted November 19, 2008 Report Posted November 19, 2008 im guessin youve undone the bolt at the bottom of the fork.... if there is one on that.... as for seperating it should be too difficult, and should just pop out so you can slide it out ....let us know how you get on!
addiction269 Posted November 19, 2008 Report Posted November 19, 2008 try this http://diversionclub.proboards74.com/index...amp;thread=3815 if you havent taken the damper rod out it can be a pain in the arse to remove.

Cheers JG, its actually advice from there I am following. I recognized you from there, although I just lurk rather than post. Really knowledgeable guys. Right, one leg (2nd I started) went totally to plan, the 1st one was locked solid, I soaked in wd40 and then tapped the old seal round with a little screw driver, yanked away then all of a sudden pop out it came! Cheers for all the advice.
