2639 Posted November 18, 2008 Report Posted November 18, 2008 Grumble grumble buggerfuck. And other impolite utterances. Got the 7/11 (think engine is an M) working, well running. Just need to silence some grumbles, or fill my ears with expanding foam... 1) the gearbox whines, but only in 4th gear. The whine is more pronounced under load. I'm currently avoiding using 4th. What might be causing this? Suspect a worn bearing, but why not all gears? There are no knocks so don't think its missing any teeth it doesn't jump out of any gear. Box out repairs aren't a problem, but must have replacement bits to put in same day really, bike is sole winter wheels. 2) it runs really rough. Tickover all over place, generally needs service. Valve clearances later this week, plugs and carb balance thereafter. All easy enough, just don't want to Part of this could be related to general wear within the carbs, Have taken them apart to check gunge free, and fit the road focussed dynojet bits, found stock needles well worn 3) Camchain - holy ear plugs Batman, does it rattle. Hmm will need to investigate if its manual adjustment, or what. Best find a manual for this thing I think. 4) I hope it doesn't blow up cos its great fun*, a Superduke for pennies And its loud. 4b) aside from being slightly lethal. Forks pissing oil out, shock is more boingy than Zebedee, brakes are iffy, no indicators, or mirrors. Oh and the tie rods in the shock linkage need replacing yesterday, due to a reason I'm doing my best not to think about... shhh. Foam grips make steering vague, seat is uber slidey. Shopping trollies have more accuracy. Tis fun though, especially through traffic. 4c) I think I might paint it black with a brush,
Bilko! Posted November 18, 2008 Report Posted November 18, 2008 1) The 4th gear cogs are fucked. 2) Your carbs are fucked. 3) The cam chain tensioner's fucked. 4) Your ears will be fucked. 5) It's generally fucked. 6) Matt black paint is cooooool!.
TKDMitch Posted November 19, 2008 Report Posted November 19, 2008 4th went bang on my L big time not long after I sold it I think there's a bit of a history of them doing it. Mitch
2639 Posted November 19, 2008 Author Report Posted November 19, 2008 No, no, no. It's not fucked. Merely tired, in need of some tlc, it'll get it, just not immediately. Mitch, the 'bang' is not allowed... it mustn't go bang, its my only transport at the mo. It must not go bang
ronenige Posted November 20, 2008 Report Posted November 20, 2008 Hi andy , parts catalogue if you need it http://www.alpha-sports.com/suzuki_parts.h...CFQ9ZMAodxzcoqg and a manual , http://www.thesparesnetwork.co.uk/manuals/...cat_name=Suzuki hope you dont need any of them !!
2639 Posted November 20, 2008 Author Report Posted November 20, 2008 Cheers Nige, looks like I will be needing those, so thanks. But how do you lot find this stuff? Whenever I try to google for something specific I just seem to find endless rubbish! Don't bother answering btw, I'm a lost cause with computers.
Andy J Posted November 20, 2008 Report Posted November 20, 2008 If its a M engine it will have shim type valve adjustment, all others are screw and locknut. Out of balance carbs will make it idle badly. The camchain tensioner is a known weakspot on these engines. They arent manually adjustable but APE do a manual type. Remember too, there is no water jacket to keep things quiet on these motors, they are all noisier than watercooled engines. As for the gearbox whine, its probably a worn gear. I replaced 4th gear driven on my 1100,it was showing signs of wear but no noise. Have you been to www.oldskoolsuzuki.info? Theres a mine of good help and info there. Andy J
Nick. Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 Yeah, check the cam chain tensioner before replacing the chain. My 1100L developed a rattle which was vanquished by replacing the tensioner spring. As for the whining noise - I thought it was a characteristic of the the bike? I have an L model and an M model and both 'whine' in 3rd and 4th gear. The bandit 12 I had did as well. If it can take WOT in those gears and it doesn't jump out on you, then I wouldn't worry about it for now. The M lump should have a stronger gearbox, anyway (it's undercut). If the idle is rougher than a roofer's arse, then it may be worth checking the emulsion tubes in the carbs. These will, given enough mileage, wear an oval shape (more aggressively tapered needles accelerate this wear) and cause the bike to run rich, hence the roughness. They are about fifteen quid each from Robinson's to buy. Cheers, Nick
