im having trouble removing the stem bearing of the bottom yoke, ive tried heat and a chisel as it says but it doesnt want to move is there a specific tool or do i need to cut it off?

Angle grinder. It's the only alternative to hours and hours of fucking about with a succesion of pointy chisel type tools and lots of swearing. A hack saw won't touch it either, ask me how I know...

For what it's worth, I've had success with a very long, two leg puller.

ive been looking at bearing pullers but there not very long!

Angle grinder with a cutting disc in, I favour 1mm but a 3mm will do, no need to go mad with it though, donn't cut all the way through it, just weaken it sufficiently so that one swift smack with a chisel and the inner track will crack and voila ! It should just tap off

I got this one from Cromwell Industrial. It's really long! If you can't find it, make it!

An angle grinder will work but it is very, very easy to damage the stem!

weld around the the inside of it,it will shrink and fall out..........easy

Hang on...... Surely the inner race would be on the outside of the stem, not on the inside...... How can it drop out?

things expand when heated. not shrink

Ah, sorry, got it. Sounds like a great way to do it! It was the dropping out bit that confused me. I thought that the inner race can't drop out 'cos it is not inside the stem, it is outside it.

I agree about the heat side of things, I think that's half of what undo's it when I've gone through them in the past with a grinder, they get sizzling hot and that in turn means you can make a good bit of movement on them. Don't dispair though mate, they're a bitch to do sometimes, but once they get going, they seem to come off OK, it's just a matter of getting them started.

If its an alloy yoke, just press the stem out of the bottom. Thats the normal way to do it.

I think he means the outer race still in the frame. Running a small bead of weld on them makes them contract. Works a treat. Did it last week on a gearbox bearing on some old clunker of a Brit bike. The bloke had tried everything to get it out without damaging the cases, couple of runs of weld, tap with a punch and out she came.
