Basil Posted March 17, 2010 Report Posted March 17, 2010 WTF? that's is mental, I hope he got thrown away for a long time and banned forever FFS! This ^
jaycee Posted March 17, 2010 Report Posted March 17, 2010 Jesus, was he wired out of his skull on speed?? Sorted for ya
jollygiant Posted March 17, 2010 Report Posted March 17, 2010 Prob not seen it because any lorryist will tell you there is a blind spot 8ft wide directly in front of the cab that you cannot see!!! Thats why all new lorries have a mirror to the out side of the windscreen facing downwards..

Regardless of the horsepower involved, you'd still be aware that you had over a ton of screeching, sideways car in front of you !
Tomfoolery Posted March 17, 2010 Report Posted March 17, 2010 In the rain? After driving for 20 hours? Maybe not...
vanman Posted March 17, 2010 Report Posted March 17, 2010 Seem to remember seeing this somewhere else apparantly he did stop and said that he was just trying to slow down a bit at a time for fear of the car spinning off the road. Any one remember a few years back the arrtic which was hurtling down the m1 to the last junction before london with apparantly a stuck accelerator .. Police camera action dined out on that one for years
jaycee Posted March 17, 2010 Report Posted March 17, 2010 What i never understood, even as a kid, If the accelerator sticks, why not just turn off the ignition?
Frey Bentos Posted March 17, 2010 Report Posted March 17, 2010 Maybe it's his car and he was just pushing it home.
vanman Posted March 17, 2010 Report Posted March 17, 2010 What i never understood, even as a kid, If the accelerator sticks, why not just turn off the ignition? Have you ever tried turning the steering wheel on a car with power steering ,with the ignition turned off ? Then try it on a forty ton arrtic
fran9r Posted March 17, 2010 Report Posted March 17, 2010 What i never understood, even as a kid, If the accelerator sticks, why not just turn off the ignition? If the air pressure drops, the brakes will jam on...no engine running means reducing pressure. It may be possible to stop, if the brakes are in as new condition. No HGVs are though. And thats if you can press hard enough on the air assisted brakes to stop 44 tonnes, without using the steering (as above) and without going down through 16 (air assisted) gears. It was an odd one though...I'd expected to use seperate buttons to reduce the speed or turn if off -both failing? I'd have gone for ramming it down the box myself...if it was a manual, anyway.
wavydavy Posted March 17, 2010 Report Posted March 17, 2010 Have you ever tried turning the steering wheel on a car with power steering ,with the ignition turned off ? Then try it on a forty ton arrtic But with a 12litre diesel you've got a hell of a lot of engine braking. If it just carries on at the limiter then without being able to slow you *are* going to cause shit. If you turn it off, you might cause shit but you'll also stop pretty soon. The "I can't turn it off" excuse wears as thin as that fella in the Prius' argument as soon as you scratch just a little under the surface - "If I turn it off *I* might get hurt! If I carry on, I might kill someone else, but at least I might find a way to save me!!!!"
madmike Posted March 18, 2010 Report Posted March 18, 2010 What i never understood, even as a kid, If the accelerator sticks, why not just turn off the ignition? Or... Put your foot down on the clutch?

And thats if you can press hard enough on the air assisted brakes to stop 44 tonnes, Surely though you`ve just contradicted yourself?? As you say, truck brakes are held off by air, and by knocking the engine off and pumping the brakes would this not deplete the air causing the brakes to come on and stop the vehicle? Not trying to be a prick, and I am properly fucking tired (got a 6 year old with Gastro Interitus liberally spraying the bathroom with nasty liquid from both ends every five minutes, gave up trying to go to sleep long ago..) but I just don`t understand what you`ve written. Like I say, not trying to be a twat mate, that ain`t me. Rob.

wavydavy Posted March 19, 2010 Report Posted March 19, 2010 I don't know if anyone's been following the news about this, but the Police are "re-investigating" as they were called to what they thought was a simple collision between the lorry and car in January and both were stopped on the hard shoulder. Sounds like neither car driver nor the lorry driver mentioned the "pushing up the A1(M) at 60mph for a few miles" bit at the time.......

Like I say, not trying to be a twat mate, that ain`t me. Rob. Kinda...what I meant is if the brakes lock because the air pressure drops, they will lock on -that may not be the best way to stop a class 1, as it may well become very unstable and possibly roll. To be honest, I'd guess it would be OK in a new wagon, but I've been in plenty that would drop pressure and I wouldn't like my chances if the brakes did come full on.
nigel.ted Posted March 19, 2010 Report Posted March 19, 2010 And thats if you can press hard enough on the air assisted brakes to stop 44 tonnes Dont get this sorry The truck in the video is a Daf xf the driver is probably on cruise control at 90kmh he wont see the car there and he also wont feel it being a wet road ,you have to uderstand the cab is not directly connected to the chassis, its on air bags with oil shockers he might feel something on the impact ,sit up and think wtf the truck will maintain its speed its on cc. I pushed a peugeot 406 across a r/b and didnt feel a thing only knew it was there when i changed up and stopped!! As for dumping the air at speed only a complete fucking nut case will do that!!! he is pulling a tanker ffs modern trucks have discs all round with abs and ebs and stop very quick now in full control. if there was nothing wrong with that truck all he had to do was touch the brake or clutch to knock it off cruise and let the engine brake slow it nigel wrong truck ooops
fran9r Posted May 26, 2010 Report Posted May 26, 2010 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/lancashire/10162158.stm Kept his licence, and rightly so too in my book.
