Pauly Posted October 19, 2008 Report Posted October 19, 2008 Just bought m'self one of these as a winter ride, seems ok but the idling is a bit rough. I know the likelyhood is that the carbs need setting up, but there is a mention in the owners manual of air suction valves. It says they can cause rough idling too. Anyone know what they look like or where they live? Are they owner serviceable?

While you are in there, check the float heights. AFTER doing that, synchronise the butterflies. It sorts poor idle problems 9/10 times!
Pauly Posted October 19, 2008 Author Report Posted October 19, 2008 Cool! More stuff to buy Can't decide whether it's easier to pay the local guy to do the synchro, or splash out on my own set of gauges. It's an easy enough job once you've dug down to the carbs, init? Do you bother checking compressions before hand?
mac d Posted October 19, 2008 Report Posted October 19, 2008 Mine is far from smooth as I think it needs the same attention that Spacemonkey has suggested, but new plugs always make a noticeable difference to the feel of it.
Pauly Posted October 19, 2008 Author Report Posted October 19, 2008 Just been out for another ride on it. I have now noticed that it smells pretty rich at idle so I guess you are bang on the money Spacemonkey. However the front brake is utter crap, so thats first priority. Have either of you guys boughgt caliper rebuild kits from M&P? They don't state in the blurb whether the kit does one or two calipers.

Do you bother checking compressions before hand? I forgot..... Check and double check that the choke plungers are returning properly. I manky cable could cause all sorts of grief here! New plugs wouldn't hurt while you have the airbox off and while you have 'em out you could do a compression test. - Although if you can get access to a leak down tester then that will tell you far more. If you had a problem in this area I'd expect poor starting though.....
Pauly Posted October 19, 2008 Author Report Posted October 19, 2008 That is a possibility. The throttle cable was bone dry. Sounded like it was frayed and about to snap, but was totally without lube. Starts really well and once you get up to 4krevs it tries to run away with you. Got that lovely airbox growl too, heh heh!
ronenige Posted October 19, 2008 Report Posted October 19, 2008 there are air pipes connecting 1 to 4 and 2 to 3 , i have often found when balancing them they sound sweet but when you re-connect these they sound lumpy again , so blank them off , in my experience it seems to make them run a lot sweeter and costs nowt . while your in there clean the coolant filter or you will suffer from carb icing in the winter . hth
