Scott10r Posted October 17, 2008 Report Posted October 17, 2008 Me and my dad (54duck) have been debating on whether or not to fit his r6 track bike with the set of R1 forks we picked up. I guess the thing is we have the bike set up pretty good with the standard fork and it rides really good, just dont know if it would be worth putting the R1 bits on and having to set the bike up again and then end up with nothing better than we had. I understand the advantages of the inverted R1 set, but if he feels like he is riding the bike as fast as he feels he can go do you think it would be worth it now?? (They do look alot cooler though.)Just a conversation stater i guess. CHEERS!!!!!!
johnnymack63 Posted October 17, 2008 Report Posted October 17, 2008 Only one way to find out if it's worth it !
scoot Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 I'd be interested to know how this goes Scott10r,I've got some time on my hands now (lost my license for 3 months) and was thinking of doing the same thing. A lot of blokes on the R6 forums have done this mod and swear by it.
54duck Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 I think we will give it a go. And take pics of the operation and any problems encountered. Good project for the shyte weather coming.

54duck Posted November 3, 2008 Report Posted November 3, 2008 Right, firstly the easiest go for the 99-02 R6 to R1 fork swap is buy the 98-01 forks, clamp/Upper&Lower. The swap is straight forward. The only change is you need to use the stock R6 steering stem in the swap. Dead easy to do. Things get a little more involved with later model R1 forks but still easy if you know what will work and why. 1. You will need a 98-01 triple clamp, upper and lower. It has the correct offset and width. 2. 98-01 Forks or 02-05 forks and axle for 02-03 R1. 3. Front fender for 98-03 R1. That will be our parts list to do this swap. Any R1 fork up to 05 will work but you will need the 02-03 axle for any forks newer than 01. Next I 'll do a photo session of the swap scott10r and I attempted. Strictly amateur mind you.

The swap is straight forward. AFAIK the R1 and R6 'early' models of the vintages above share the same front wheel, wheel axle [ithink] and front brake discs and calipers. hope that helps

The 02-03 and the 04-06 forks use different axles. The 04-06 used a wider wheel spacing and the triple clamp is too wide for the swap.
stretch Posted November 5, 2008 Report Posted November 5, 2008 tootall has a track bike that is older r6-or newer r6s, anyhow it's got usd forks on it-ask him.
54duck Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 Finished and a test down the road, all is good. Now we just have to wait till next year for a go on the track. Pics of the job. Wheel off. Clamp bolts and clipons off. Brakes, let them dangle but I put a wedge of wood in the calipers in case some numpty squeezes the brakes. Out with the old forks and off with the top clamp. Knock the lock nut and top nut off. A drift will work if you dont have the correct spanner.
54duck Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 Drop the triple clamp out the bottom, and watch those bearings, give them a once over to make sure they are in good nick. If you don't have access to a press have a shop do this part. Press the old r6 stem out and place the stem in the r1 lower clamp. It's a wedge fit so no secrets here. Here is the difference between the r6 and r1 stems. Reassemble. Viola.
MonkeyJim Posted November 18, 2008 Report Posted November 18, 2008 Nice work! good pics out of interest, which model R1 forks did you use [they look like maybe 02/03 ones] and were they standard or modified? Do I spy some akrapovic full system goodness sneaking in to some of the pics? Bonus points!
54duck Posted November 18, 2008 Report Posted November 18, 2008 The fork are 04-05 r1 and they have had some some fettling. The exhaust is Hindle Titanium sys. it rocks and we shortened the can 4 inches.
