drunkn munky Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 I have the engine removed from my NC35 which is looking pretty grotty. I wanna clean it up and then paint the casings so whats the best way to do it? do i get the scrubbing brush out with some sort of cleaning solution or do i just pop it down to the shot blasters and let them take care of it?
Gobert23 Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 Clamp all the hose ends, tape up all the inlets and stuff (basically seal it up)... then hit it with a steam cleaner. That'll blast the very worst of the crud off it (inc. loose bits of paint, etc)
Number 6 Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 Scotchbrite pads white spirit and some patience.

I dont want to hijack your thread, but i posted some pics about my current project with some details of the guy that vapour blasted my stuff. http://pbmagforum.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=939 if you need any more info/photos, pm me. the engine has to be stripped down though.
Pauly Posted October 19, 2008 Report Posted October 19, 2008 I was about to suggest vapour blasting but billysbones beat me to it. I've used it myself and it works an absolute treat. You will need to ensure that the residue is thoroughly cleaned from oilways etc. Unlessyou can screw blanks into holes the likelyhood is that any other kind of masking will get blaasted away, it's a pretty high pressure system.
andicog Posted November 11, 2008 Report Posted November 11, 2008 Cleaned mine up with scotchpad and panel wipe, used normal basecoat and 2 pack clear. its stood up fine to the heat.
nedster Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 i used some stuff from work called M.E.K. cant be arsed writtin the whole thing down its awesome at everything just dont inhale lol it fucks with your nervous system not that theres anything wrong with that but you need to know someone working in the chemical industry rocks
alexp5 Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 That'll be Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide then. I thought that was a banned substance, or is that Trike (Tricloroethane)? Fuck me, yeah... you don't want to work in "an enclosed environment" with that shit, you'll get the heebie jeebies alright! I've used scotchbrite/pan scourers, parafin, followed by brake cleaner to degrease, with good results.

It burns like a bastard. Not straight away though. got some on my overalls without knowing where I used to work, and it burned all my torso. still got some scars from it. usually used as catalyst for resins. wouldnt use it on ally, would probably damage the surface.
Richy Posted November 22, 2008 Report Posted November 22, 2008 If you get it blasted it wants to be `nut blasted` crushed nut shells are used so if it gets in the oil ways etc. it desolves and wont trash your engine
jollygiant Posted November 22, 2008 Report Posted November 22, 2008 Cleaned mine up with scotchpad and panel wipe, used normal basecoat and 2 pack clear. its stood up fine to the heat. YUMMY

The test lab had extraction fans like you wouldn't believe because it's one of the most carcinogenic substances on the map I believe.
